The Offices of
Dr. Stancil J.L. Hutchinson,
Psychologist, Neuropsychologist, Qualified Medical Examiner, Expert Witness, Supervisor, Lecturer, & Therapist
Dr. Hutchinson provides psychological and neuropsychological evaluations across Northern and Central California as well as a variety of cutting-edge therapies.
EVALUATION is the first step for all members of Dr. Hutchinson's clinic. Consult on the phone for 15 minutes, free of charge, then meet Dr. Hutchinson and his team for an hour. A plan for evaluation, psychological and/or neuropsychological is developed, which can include not only clinical interview and mental status observations but a battery of psychological and/or neuropsychological tests, record review, and collaboration with other clinicians, as needed. Dr. Hutchinson is always interested in providing the most informed evaluations possible and can integrate EEG brain mapping, neurotransmitter testing, evaluating genetics, and other methods rarely utilized by psychologists. Once a client's report is complete, Dr. Hutchinson meets again with the client for a feedback session and a customized treatment plan is presented. Treatment at Dr. Hutchinson's clinic involves tracking client progress with objective data based on self-report, client performance, and even client physiology! All clients receive a three ring binder which serves as external scaffolding, something they can review week to week to increase the likelihood that they will internalize exactly what they to become exactly who they want. Conditions evaluated include Addiction, Anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism, Bipolar, Body Image Issues, Chronic Pain, Dementia, Depression, Learning Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD), Phobias, Personality Disorders, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Sleep Disturbance, & Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Dr. Hutchinson also provides forensic evaluations as a QME and Expert Witness.
INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY is a traditional way of providing treatment services. Dr. Hutchinson and his clinicians provide only research-based interventions: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP), Schema Focused Therapy (SFT), and psycho-education of clients and loved ones. Conditions helped by these gold-standard approaches include essentially all those aforementioned. Relevant work books and smart phone applications are typically recommended as is measuring a client's progress via psychological and neuropsychological testing and other methods along the way. Tele-therapy is offered, allowing for evaluation and treatment across California!
NEUROFEEDBACK (NF) is another cutting-edge therapy designed to improve emotional, cognitive, and physical performance as well as enhance focus and deepen sleep. It helps train your brain to function more efficiently. Some keep coming back after their issues are resolved to maximize peak performance. During NF, your brain receives information about what it has just done, every micro-second. You wear clips and sensors, which pick up the delicate electrical activity of your brain. All you do is relax and listen to music. NF is powerful because it communicates directly with your brain, is not painful, and is also safe for children. Research shows that NF improves issues related to inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, commonly associated with ADHD. Other conditions helped by NF include Addiction, ADHD, Anxiety, Chronic Pain, Depression, Migraines, Learning Disorders, PTSD, Stress, Sleep Disturbance, TBI, and even epilepsy.
NEUROSTIMULATION for depression and other mental health issues has a long history from its early days, horror stories involving Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), better known as "Shock," to more recent, less invasive iterations, like Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Such interventions are precluded to the realm of psychiatrists for a variety of reasons but newer technologies, those that provide gentle stimulation that produces serotonin and other neurochemicals responsible for healthy mood and sleep, can be prescribed by psychologists. Dr. Hutchinson has such a device at his office, cleared by the FDA, and can provide consultation on this front. Interested clients can purchase such a device through Dr. Hutchinson and not only receive a discount but, if neurostimulation is felt a reasonable alternative to medication use, clients can save thousands of dollars overall and not risk unpleasant side effects. Conditions helped by neurostimulation include depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
COGNITIVE REMEDIATION/REHABILITATION THERAPY (CRT) is a structured 1-on-1 form of treatment designed to address problems with memory, attention, judgment, planning, listening, speaking, and learning and other areas that apply to youths, the middle-aged, and the elderly. This approach is research-based, leading to improvements in understanding one's strengths and weaknesses, increased cognitive functioning, and better quality of life. CRT, like NF, is particularly popular with concerned parents of children with ADHD and learning problems as well as elders who wish to avoid cognitive slippage due to aging and/or Dementia. Other conditions helped by CRT include Learning Disorders and neuro-cognitive deficits due to TBI.
SELF-AUTHORING is a structured program in which you write about your past, present, and future. It is impossible to know exactly who you are and how to move forward with your life without knowing where you come from. You begin by writing a structured autobiography to attain increased insight, reviewing your past experiences in a structured way. Then write about your present and sort out your virtues and faults. With future authoring you think about your potential, what you want, and exactly how to get it. Research shows that Self-Authoring has various unexpected positive benefits, improving not only mental but physical health as well as cognitive performance. Dr. Hutchinson often integrates Schema Therapy, Cine-Therapy, and other narrative approaches to optimize his clients' experience.
VIRTUAL REALITY GRADUATED EXPOSURE THERAPY (VRGET) allows you to face your fears in a simulation instead of the real world. Graduated exposure in a controlled environment helps ensure you successfully face fears. During VRGET, you are immersed in an environment via goggles and headphones. As an example, for those that avoid travel due to fear of flying in an airplane, a variety of simulations can be provided from waiting in an airport terminal to experiencing serious turbulence when in flight. VRGET can also address fears related to heights, public speaking, test anxiety, elevators, needles, animals, germs, darkness, medical procedures, subways, feeling trapped or unable to escape, and social situations. Additionally, VRGET can be used for stress reduction, eating disorders, body image concerns, excessive worrying, OCD, and even PTSD.
